A knock at the door woke me up, and Keaton’s chest rumbled in annoyance against my back.

“I think it’s time for the run,” I murmured to him, peeling my body off of his. I lost my balance before my first foot hit the ground, but Keaton caught me as if on instinct before my face collided with the floor.

“Careful,” Keaton grunted at me.

“I’m fine,” I mumbled into his chest.

“Sure you are.”

My feet finally hit the ground, and I stumbled toward the door. Keaton intercepted me, pulling me to his chest before he tugged it open for me.

Guess he was still a little paranoid after everything.

And yeah… I didn’t blame him.

Honestly, I was still avoiding all thoughts about what had happened in the forest that day when we ran out of the hotel, and trying not to acknowledge the fact that I’d literally been held against my will for weeks. Not to mention both of the attempts on my life.

It wasn’t easy.

None of it was, even though I knew it could’ve been much worse.

But I’d survived, and my natural tendency was just to ignore the past and move on.

Not that it was a healthy tendency… eventually I was pretty sure it would all catch up with me and I’d have a breakdown or something.

“Heard you snoring and figured you might need a wakeup call,” Travis said with a grin.

Keaton’s arm tightened around me. “Thanks.”

“No problem. The whole pack’s hopping with excitement; we couldn’t have the guest of honor sleeping through the damn thing.”

My face flushed.

It was stupid, but that made me feel kind of special. I’d never been a guest of honor before.

I knew what they were really honoring was the gift I may or may not have to make the pack feel calm and connected and whatnot, but still. It was nice to feel wanted.

Keaton and I ducked into our room to strip most of the way, but I put on my boots along with my big t-shirt. The snow made my toes feel numb, and since I wasn’t sure how far we were walking, I didn’t want the damn things to fall off.

We made it to the front of the group after a thirty-minute hike through the forest (and the insane number of people gathered in it, excited and either naked or almost naked) at night.

My vision was shifted to wolf so I could see, but the cold was getting bad by the time we finally stopped next to the elders and a couple other people I assumed were the other wolves with gifts.

“So am I supposed to say something?” I asked one of the elders—the friendliest-looking lady.

“Just shift and let the wolf in you take control.” She reached out and tapped my chest, over my heart.

That made absolutely zero sense considering I was the wolf in me, but I nodded as if she’d said something completely logical.

Stepping out of my boots, I leaned them up against the tree before shucking my shirt and shifting forms. Keaton followed suit, and so did everyone else around us.
